A Fantastic Earth Day in Anacortes
The Anacortes Earth Day Celebration Weekend was a massive success, with over 1,000 people taking to the streets on Saturday, and even more than that on Friday night! It was so special to see the streets filled with community, art, and appreciation for the beautiful Earth we call home.
Youth participated in creating chalk art, matching models of poop to their corresponding animals, crafting pollinators from pipe cleaners, and having their faces painted. Families enjoyed free popcorn as they wandered the streets, learning through fun activities about easy, achievable ways to protect our planet with help from local organizations. Many also took home beautiful seeds and plant starts!
Of course, the Sustainable Fashion show by our neighbors at Chilly Rain, the Luminary Parade, and Procession of the Species were absolutely magical to witness, dancing down Commercial Avenue in a wave of artistry and celebration.
We at Friends of the ACFL were thrilled to help plan this event and to open the doors of our Forest Discovery Center to the public for the first time since our soft opening ended in December. It was wonderful to share our love of local pollinators and flowers with so many community members. We look forward to many more days like Saturday this summer, when we officially reopen our doors on June 13th!
It was an honor to collaborate with our partners PaperBirds Studio, Anacortes Procession of the Species, and of course, the Downtown Anacortes Alliance, who invited us to be part of this fantastic event.
On behalf of all the partners on our Earth Day committee, thank you to the organizations who participated and brought educational fun to Commercial Avenue, and to everyone who carried luminaries, marched in the Procession of the Species, taught or attended workshops, volunteered, played music, or contributed in any way.
Special thanks to our sponsors: Rick Epting Foundation for the Arts, Anacortes Arts Festival, The City of Anacortes, Anacortes Creative District, Anacortes Rotary, Emerald Marine, City Councilmember Ryan Walters, Transition Fidalgo, and Peggy Flynn!
