volunteer opportunities

We have a variety of volunteer opportunities for young adults and adults:

  • Trail Work Parties

    • Quarterly Trail Work for ages 12-up

  • Trail Stewards Program

    • Trail Work for adults. Even more dedicated than our quarterly Trail Work parties, this is for those who are willing to commit to at least 10 hours/month to train maintenance, as well as additional training

  • Trail Ambassadors

    • See additional information below

  • Fundraising and Event Planning

    • During the summer time for our Summer Party and in November at our Annual Benefit

  • Adult Community Hike Volunteer Assistant

    • Provides support to our Community Programs Coordinator. If you have a special skill and would like to serve as a guest co-leader of a hike, please add more information about your skill set in the comments at the end of the sign up form below.

  • Citizen Science Volunteer

    • Please see our Citizen Science Friday events (on Upcoming Events page) for more information and to officially sign up as a volunteer for this program

ongoing ways to get involved!

Meet. Attend our monthly Board meetings at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. We are continuing to meet via Zoom; to be added to the meeting, please email Executive Director Asa Deane at asa@friendsoftheacfl.org.

Serve. Any current member is invited to serve on a committee. We currently have active committees for Education and Outreach, Communications and Membership, Finance, Advocacy, and Stewardship. Contact the Board President at board@friendsoftheacfl.org.

Lead. Are you interested in serving on the Board of Directors? Our seven- to nine-member board are elected at large by the membership for two-year terms. Contact board@friendsoftheacfl.org to learn more about open positions.

Party! Volunteer for the annual benefit event which is held on the first Saturday on November. We are always looking for folks to help with planning, publicity, decorating, and set up for the annual dance and auction that provides so much of our education program funding. Or, donate your art, merchandise or services for our silent auction. Sponsorships are always welcome too. Contact info@friendsoftheacfl.org to help.

Join Together. In February, join other members at our annual meeting for an informative presentation, board elections, an update on Friends of the ACFL business, and socializing. Watch our homepage for details. Watch the most recent meeting here.

Show Up. Attend monthly Forest Advisory Board meetings (cityofanacortes.org). Share your opinions and observations with this appointed body that helps to set ACFL policy for the City. Meetings are the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 at the Anacortes Senior Center (currently meeting via Zoom).

Speak Up. Write or call your City Councilor (cityofanacortes.org) about ACFL issues. Make sure your elected representatives know that you support preservation and protection of the ACFL.

Your ideas are always welcome. If you’d like to get involved or have an idea for a Friends of the Forest activity, call or email a board member (board@friendsoftheacfl.org) or the Development and Outreach Director (ashleigh@friendsoftheacfl.org) or join us at a regular monthly meeting.
