Hike Your Way Through 2026 with Friends of the ACFL

We are no strangers to New Year’s resolutions. That fresh, blank slate can feel exciting, intimidating, and a little overwhelming all at once. At Friends of the ACFL, we’re doing the same thing you are: setting goals, planning calendars, and imagining what the year ahead could look like. The good news? Many of the most common New Year’s resolutions pair perfectly with what we offer here at Friends!

Prioritize physical health. Moving your body doesn’t have to mean a gym membership or a rigid routine. Our guided hikes and well-marked self-guided trail maps offer a simple, accessible way to get moving while enjoying fresh air and beautiful forest scenery. Whether you’re easing into a new habit or building endurance, walking in the woods counts.

Support your mental health. Science consistently shows that time in nature reduces stress, improves mood, and boosts focus. Quiet time in the forest can be grounding in ways few other activities are. Think of it as mindfulness without the pressure; just you, the trail, and the forest.

Get involved and give back. Volunteering is a powerful way to start the year with purpose. From stewardship projects to ongoing volunteer roles, there are many ways to support the forestlands and our community. Memberships are another way to contribute while staying connected to our work!

Spend less, live more.  Exploring the woods with friends or family is free! It can replace screen time, encourage real connection, and remind us that time in the woods isn’t about productivity, it’s about presence.

Learn something new. Curious about plants, wildlife, or local ecology? Our Naturalist Club and educational programs offer opportunities to build skills and deepen your relationship with the land. Member priority registration for the 2026 Naturalist Club opens January 15th!

This year, consider a resolution that feels good and does good. Step outside, slow down, and move your way through the new year with Friends of the ACFL.
