Summer Solstice in the ACFL

Summer Solstice in the ACFL

Come on a hike with Beck through the ACFL! Learn about how the position of the earth relative to the sun creates conditions for warmer, summer weather, and see the ways in which the forest is changing with the season. Keep your eye out for these birds: hairy woodpeckers on a snag, swainson’s thrush in a red-elderberry bush, black-capped chickadees in a western red cedar, a spotted towhee in an oceanspray bush, and the song of a pacific wren throughout.

Aerenchyma Adapt-a-second!

Just adapt-a-second!

Aerenchyma: A common wetland adaptation that gives plants the ability to grow and thrive in waterlogged conditions!

Just like the ecosystems in the ACFL are unique, so are the plants and animals that call them home! Many of our local species have developed special adaptations that allow them to thrive in the varied conditions that define these ecosystems. Just adapt-a-second clips devote a few seconds to unearthing these sometimes hidden features of our forest inhabitants.

All About Wetlands Doodle Video

Since we can’t get out together in the forest, we’ve decided to create a series of short educational videos about our special and local forest ecosystems and inhabitants!

Our first video of the series, created, narrated, and beautifully illustrated by our very own Forest Educator, Melissa Courtney, is all about wetlands. Did you know that wetlands are the sponges, nurseries, and strainers of our forestlands? Check out this short doodle video to learn more about how this important ecosystem works to provide these ecosystem services and more!
